Eén van de consequenties van de Vietnam-oorlog, waren de kinderen die GI's achterlieten bij hun Vietnamese vriendinnen. Deze vrouwen werden gediscrimineerd, behandeld als collaborateurs en hun kinderen misbruikt. Het verhaal gaat over één van deze kinderen, Binh, die zijn dorp moet verlaten en naar Saigon trekt. Uiteindelijk probeert hij te vluchten naar Amerika en op zoek te gaan naar zijn vader.
