Amerika, begin 1900. De voormalige marshal en op leeftijd zijnde Steve Judd wordt gevraagd een goudtransport naar Coarse Gold te escorteren. Steve vraagt zijn oude vriend Gil Westrum om hem te assisteren. Gil’s pupil Heck Longtree gaat ook mee. Onderweg, tijdens een overnachting op de ranch van de religieuze fanaat Joshua Knudsen, leren ze Joshua’s jonge dochter Elsa kennen. Elsa wil haar vader ontvluchten en ze wil mee reizen naar Coarse Gold om daar te trouwen met Billy Hammond. Dit leidt tot conflicten binnen het trio. Steve weet namelijk niet, dat Gil en Heck van plan zijn het goud te stelen.
